You might be thinking that an engagement session just seems unnecessary. You’re going to get so many amazing photos from your wedding day. Why would you need more? An engagement session is definitely more important than you may initially realize. Below are 5 reasons why you should do an engagement session.

1. Get comfortable in front of the camera. 

Chances are the last time you had professional photos taken was in high school. Awkwardly posing and smiling for your senior photo is a far different experience then your engagement session.

It’s normal to feel nervous at first since you might not be sure what to expect. But once we start chatting and getting to know each other, you will feel so much more comfortable in front of the camera.

My approach to photography is not to make you feel stiff or posed. You’ll be talking, laughing, hugging, kissing, and just being yourselves in front of my camera.

2. Feel more confident about your choice of a photographer.

You love the photos on your photographer’s website, but you still may have a little bit of doubt. “These couples seem super photogenic. We’re not like that. Will our photos look just as good? “

Even being a photographer myself, I’m guilty of thinking the exact same thing when I was planning my wedding. But once I saw the photos from the engagement session, I felt so much more confident about our choice of a photographer. I loved the photos from my engagement session, so I had no worries about photos on my wedding day.

3. You actually need some nice photos.
You may be surprised, but you’ll find out that leading up to the wedding day you are going to need some professional photos of you and your fiancé. Engagement photos are the perfect thing to use on save the dates, a guest sign in book, and even your wedding website. You could order enlargements of your favorite photos to use as decor at your reception. Also, a few framed prints are the perfect gifts for parents who may have contributed their time/money to your special day.

4. Use it for your hair and makeup trial.

Many hair stylists and makeup artists include a trial as part of their packages. Don’t waste this special perk on a random day. 

An engagement session is the perfect time to see how your hair and makeup looks on camera. Also, you’ll be able to tell how well it lasts after being outside for awhile. Then if you think any adjustments should be made, you can let the stylist or artist know before your wedding day.

5. It’s fun!

Many of the couples I meet are pleasantly surprised at just how much fun they have at their session. Wedding planning is stressful, and an engagement session can be a much deserved break.
